The Italian Job

On the 1st of July 2012 Saltburn Events Committee will be holding an Event based on ‘The Italian Job’. As part of the event I have been commissioned to paint a street art mural on the wall by the pier, as well as creating artwork to promote the event. Arts Bank Mural/Exhibition

My artwork is currently on exhibition with works by TSunarti and Robert Nixon in the Arts Bank Gallery, Saltburn-by-the-sea. As part of the exhibition (which runs from November 2011 till the end of February 2012) I was commissioned by the the gallery to paint a mural within the old bank vault. The mural is based on the idea of Mother Earth called ‘Mother Boro’ and shows the two sides of Teesside, the rural and the industrial.

Graffiti Workshop

I did a workshop at Seaham Trinity Primary School where I talked to the students about graffiti and street art to introduce them to their graffiti topic. I showed the students some examples using both stencils and free hand and talked to them about the differences between legal and illegal graffiti/street art. Y6 Girl: ‘It was amazing, we had no idea what was going to happen then when we got outside there was a real Artist! He showed us lots of things including stencil work, free style graffiti and we learned lots about other Street Artists. I can’t wait to meet him again and I’m so excited for our topic now!’

Y6 Boy: ‘When we walked up to Stephen I felt so excited, then when he began to paint it was amazing! I loved the bit when he taught us how to do our own name in graffiti, I haven’t stopped doing art since! I’m so excited about the trip to see his exhibition at Saltburn Arts Bank.’

Teacher: ‘The children got so much out of the visit from Stephen, he spoke to them in simple, age appropriate terms about safety, the history of street art and how to produce good pieces of art themselves. It was the perfect opening to our topic and they can’t wait to learn more about street art. We are taking them to Saltburn Arts Bank to see his exhibition as we were so impressed wih his work.’

Oliver Set

While working at The Kings Academy I painted the set for their production of Oliver. Whole thing was painted in 2 days.

My Neighbour Totoro Mural

My latest mural was created for a little boys room (Sidney, aged 3). My Neighbour Totoro is his favourite film, so I created this design based on the main character Totoro and his friends. The mural took nine hours to paint spread over two days (not including drying times). He was over the moon when he first saw it and I got BIG hug to say thanks!

A&P Tyne Artwork

A&P Tyne are a leading Engineering Services and Fabrication Group providing solutions for customers in the global Marine and Energy Sectors. They wanted to create a campaign based around safety in the work place and the progression of the company and their staff.

Part of my commission was to create large billboards shown above which illustrate the evolution of man, starting with the ape and ending with a modern day work man from A&P. Using local landmarks, engineering and construction I created a large illustration spelling out ‘safety’ along with an illustration of an old photo with modern workers mixed in. I created a set of posters to be displayed around the work place which drew attention to wearing goggles and hard hats etc.

Nunthorpe School Mural

While working at Nunthorpe School in Middlesbrough, TADEA sponsored the painting of a mural in the schools Science Quad showing how the school could reduce its carbon footprint. I worked with a number of students on the design and painting of the graffiti mural.

Nursery Mural

This mural was created for a babies nursery. The parents did not know the sex of the child so they wanted a neutral theme. The jungle animals are bright, bold and all painted using emulsion paints and acrylic. I tried to fit the animals around the room using the space I had to help develop the design, e.g using the window frame to ‘hang’ my frog off.
