My ‘Mugshot’ project is an exploration of aesthetic principles. Set against a backdrop of sourced images of historical mugshots, I am exploring the use of colour, shape, form and structure.
I have chosen to work from mugshot photos as I find them fascinating insights into a captured moment of the subjects life. They transcend social stature, depicting people from all walks of life, all caught within a similar moment. As these images are sourced from archives they often have information of both the individual and the crime committed, which ranges from money laundering and prostitution to stealing a potato.
The aesthetic reimagining of these images has developed through a series of rules that I have set myself during their creation. Each image is created independently, following the guidelines I have set, but allowing the original image to ultimately dictate how it develops.
